Balatonfüred - Állami Szívkórház fürdője

8231- Balatonfüred
Gyógytér 2.

You may refresh you self in a charming little town, by the northern shore of Lake Balaton if you visit the thermal spa of Balatonfüred. The town is surrounded with gentle hills of a famous wine-cultivator region of Hungary. If you arrive here around the 26th of July - the name day of Ann in Hungary – when there is a great festival in Balatonfüred, which they call Anna Bál, you may taste all kinds of Hungarian wines, especially the wines of this region.

The thermal spa here is in the famous Heart Hospital. The water is a radioactive mineral water, which contains calcium, lithium, iron, hydro-carbonate, galuber-salt and carbonic acid. Besides bathing, various treatments and services are available, like different kinds of massages, therapeutic gymnastics, inhalation, and they also have accessories of physiotherapy, and a swimming pool.

The archeologist found here finds from the Roman period, so it seems like this area was already inhabited at that time. In the Middle Ages seven small settlements were here. Their names were Magyare, Arács, Kék, Füred, Siske, Papsoka and Szentkirályparragja. The first source which mentioned the name of Füred dates back to the 13C. Only Füred and Arács could survive the period when the Turks invaded Hungary. These two villages united in 1954.

One had knowledge of the healing power of the mineral water in Füred since the 17C. It got famous all around the country, when the habit of using thermal water became general. The first bathing facility was created in 1765. It was built by the Benedictine monks, who were familiar with the spring waters. In the 18C – at the beginning of the Reform Period - besides the baths, the lively cultural life of Balatonfüred made it an attractive town for lots of people. The town was considered a fashionable place by the reform nobility in general. For example the first stone-built theatre of this region was built in Balatonfüred, and the first steamer on Lake Balaton also started from here. In the 19C the political and cultural importance of the town declined. Nevertheless this was the time, when the first weekend houses were built, and the town became step by step a great holiday resort. This is what characterizes Balatonfüred’s atmosphere up to the present.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa you should take a walk in the town, visit its historical and cultural monuments and get to know more about this land’s traditions.

Jókai Mór, a famous Hungarian writer of popular romantic novels lived here in the 19C. His summer villa is now a Jókai Memorial Museum, where you can see exhibits about his life and work, and also a few things about Lake Balaton.

You can take a pleasant walk by the waterside on the Tagore Esplanade (Tagore sétány). Rabindranath Tagore, the great Indian writer visited the famous Heart Hospital for a treatment in 1926. Besides that he has given his name to this promenade, he started an interesting tradition. He was the one, who first planted a lime tree and wrote a poem here in memory of his stay. To the west along the promenade, there is a series of statues of people who have had connections with Balatonfüred and a memorial grove of trees planted by various visitors. At the beginning of this promenade, to the east of the short pier, there are sculptures representing the two of the town’s traditional occupations - The Fisherman and The Ferryman. The sculptures were made by János Pásztor in 1941. There is a fine view offering of the lake and the Tihany peninsula.

The short Blaha Lujza utca (street) is the main street of the old town, some way up from, and parallel to the lakeside and Tagore Esplanade. If you are interested in arts, you should visit the Gallery of Art-East, where you can see a collection of modern arts. Nearby this gallery is the villa of Lujza Blaha, a famous Hungarian singer. Her villa is now a public catering place. Opposite this villa is the neo-classical Round Church which was built in the 19C. If you reach the other bottom of this street, there is the Heart Hospital, and in front of it you can enter the old pump-room, where you can taste the mineral water of Füred.

The northern part of the town is very different. In its centre stands the so called red-church. Its surrounding has a great small-townish atmosphere. From here you can walk up to Cave Lóczy. It is a 120m long and 19m deep cave, which was discovered in the 19C.

If you have the time it is worth to take some excursions in the surrounding mountains too, for example you can take a short tour to the valley of Stream Koloska, which is a beautiful place.
