You may spend some peaceful days in Nagykálló, only 14km far from Nyíregyháza, if you visit its small spa, which is situated in a nice park. The water contains iodide, bromide and some salt, thus it is recommended for those who suffer from rheums or some kind of spinal complaint. There are three open-air thermal pools and some sport grounds in the spa.
History
This land was inhabited from the 11C, but it became an important settlement only after the 14C. This was the time when it got the right of holding markets. It was important, because the town was situated near some important trade roads. According to these changes, Nagykálló soon became an oppidium, which means a small town with some privileges. In the 16C, when the Turks invaded Hungary, a castle was built, and it became an important fort against the Turkish troops. After the first uprising against the Habsburgs in the 17C, István Bocskai gave some further privileges to the town and settled some of his soldiers in Nagylálló. Due to these, the town started to develop again. During the 18-19C the town didn’t develop more. It was because it has lost some of its privileges and also because its inhabitants decided for some reasons not to let the railway to reach their town. After some changes in administrations, the town became a village again. It became a town only in 1987 again.
Place of interest
After refreshing your self in the spa, you should take a walk in the town, because there are some interesting sights around.
The old buildings from the 18C are still remain, so you can visit the old town hall, the court of justice or the parish hall, while breathing in the small-townish atmosphere of Nagykálló.
Near the town there is a popular retreat centre, designed by the famous Hungarian architect, Imre Makovecz. There are different kinds of programs and performances to see there.
You can also take some excursions in the surrounding hills. If you visit the lookout tower nearby on Ínségdomb, you will see a former park’s remains from the 18C around the tower.
