History
The name of the settlement comes from the word “brave”. The first source which mentions the name of Nyírbátor dates back to the 13C. It was the property of a famous Hungarian noble family, the Bathory family. Nyírbátor was the center of their land and also their burial place. The settlement got the right of holding market and get some taxes very early, so the town developed quickly. Soon it became an oppiudium, which means a small town with some privileges.
After Turkish times it has lost its former importance. In the 19C it became a village again, lost the title of an oppidium. Nowadays tourism and some small festivals are getting more and more important in the everyday life of Nyírbátor.
