You may refresh your self in a peaceful place surrounded by trees if you visit the spa of Zalaszentrgrót. This spa was rebuilt in recent years. Inside the complex there are different kinds of pools which include an aqua park with water slides, thermal pools, a swimming pool and also small pool for the children. Around the pools there are some sport grounds and different kinds of wellness and therapeutic treatments are available like massages, solarium, sauna etc.


The first source which mentioned the name of the town dates back to the 13C. In the 14C it was already an oppidium which means it was a small town with some privileges. River Zala fall into two here and shaped an island where one built a castle in the early middle ages. During Turkish times it became an important fortress and was defended against the Turkish troops time after time. In the 15C Franciscan monks settled here and built a monastery, but they left because of the attacks. The stones of the monastery were used to strengthen the walls of Zalaszentgrót. After the expulsion of the Turks the importance of this fortress decline and it was destroyed. In the 18C a new castle was built. During the 19-20C Zalaszentgrót developed. More and more craftsmen settled here new schools were built etc. After the railway was laid down, it became an important trade center. In recent years tourism is getting more and more important.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa you should take a walk in the town to see some imposing buildings and monuments.

The catholic church was built in the 19C in baroque style, but you can also see some gothic ornaments from the 15C inside. If you like to see the ruins of the Franciscan monastery, you should take a walk to the tower near Balatoni road.

One of the most imposing buildings in Zalaszentgrót is the former Battyhány castle. Nowadays it is an institution of education for handicapped children. The castle has a large, well-kept garden.

The Hatamov Bridge near Zalaszengrót is one of the oldest stone bridges in Hungary. It was built in the 19C and got its name from a Russian soldier, who saved the bridge from the German troops during the Second World War.

Besides these there are some great places for those who like to ride the bicycle or to walk around in natural beauties.
