Only a few people didn’t move from here and started their life all over again on this marshy land. The first source, which mentioned the name of Cegléd dates back to the 13C. In the 14C its inhabitants got some privileges from the king, such as they didn’t hade to pay any duty taxes in the country. After a few years, Cegléd became the property of the Church. In the 16C the serf rose against their exploitation. This was the great Hungarian peasant uprising lead by György Dózsa in 1514. According to tradition, he took his historic speech in Cegléd. Nowadays there are some statues in the town in memory of this. After the Turks invaded Hungary, Cegléd became part of the Ottoman Empire. Nevertheless it was during the Turkish times when Cegléd developed and became an oppidium, which means a small town with some privileges. But unfortunately the Tatars, in union with the Turkish troops, destroyed the town in the 16C, and Cegléd became deserted again. This repeated while driving out the Turks from Hungary in the 17C. The town became deserted time after time because there were not enough stone around to build a great fortress here. According to this, there are no really old buildings around the town nowadays. Cegléd started to develop during the 19C. After some changes in land cultivating and industry, and that the railway had been laid down, the town became an important trade center of this land. In the 20C after some further develops, Cegléd became a modern town with its own theatre, hospital and schools. Nowadays it is an important cultural and regional centre near the capital.
