According to the finds that archeologists found here this land was inhabited since the Stone Ages.

There is a legend about the origin of the name of Csongrád. According to this, after the Hungarian conquest, this land became the property of Ond, one of the main leaders of the Hungarian tribes. An earthwork was built here, and Ond gave the name “Csernigrád” to the place, which means “Balck Town”.

In the 11C it became the centre of the shire. After the Tatars invaded Hungary in the 13C, Béla IV replaced the centre to Szeged. But Csongrád didn’t stopped developing, and became a town in the 15C. When the Turks invaded Hungary it became part of the Ottoman Empire. It was the property of the sultan, so it was relatively protected from exploitation.

After the war of independence in 1948-49, the town was set on fire by the troops of Habsburg’s because of its participation in the war. The town recovered from this destruction but became a village after some administrational changes at the end of the 19C. It became a town again in 1923. In the 20C its economy and tourism developed. The town got the Medallion of János Hild for town development and for foster of traditional culture.
