Some people call Dunaföldvár “The gate of the Great Plain”, because it is situated between the hills of Transdanubia and the lowland of the Great Plain. The town and the spa are located by the side of Danube River, on a beautiful landscape.


The thermal water contains hydrogen-carbonic and sodium. It is very similar with the healing water of Bükfürd?, thus it is recommended for those who have some kind of motor disease or joint problems. Inside the complex, there are one indoor thermal pool, one open-air swimming pool and two small pools for the children. There are some sport grounds around and besides bathing there are different kinds of treatments available, like mud-pack, massages, under water gymnastics etc.


If you are interested in archeological excavations, you can still see some around the town. One found here a very old culture’s remains which is more than four thousand years old. In the Bronze Ages there was an earthwork here.

The first source which mentioned the name of the Dunaföldvár dates back to the 11C. The earthwork was mentioned here as well, and even nowadays, the name of the town recall to this. In the 12C Béla IV had a Benedictine monastery built here. This gave more importance to Dunaföldvár. In the 14-15C the it flourished. Some important trade routes ran through the town. In the 20C it became a town, but it is still a peaceful place, with a small-townish atmosphere, between the industrial centers of Paks and Dunaújváros.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa, you should take a walk in the town, because there are some nice sights around. In the old town you may still get the atmosphere of a town from the 18-19C. You should visit the Benedictine monastery built in the 18C. There is a tower in the town, known as the Csonka-torony, which was a jail before. It was built in the 16C. Inside you can see some interesting historical exhibitions. The great woodwork of the entrance was made by István Csepeli, an artist from the town.

If you are interested in sacred places, you should visit the temples of the town, the great St Anna Church, the Calvary or one of the small chapels in the town. There is also a Serbian Orthodox church in Dunaföldvár.

If you are interested in traditional handicrafts, there are some interesting exhibitions around the town, like the Wood Carver Museum or the Museum of Cotton Printing.

Those who are interested in the surrounding land as well, should take hire a bike or take some excursions around. Horse riding is also possible.
