From the second part of the name of the town we surly know, that after the Hungarian conquest, the “Gyarmat” tribe settled here in the 10C. Nevertheless, the first source which mentioned the name of the settlement dates back to the 14C. In the 15C it became an oppidium, which means a small town with some privileges. Due to this, Fehérgyarmat soon became an important centre of this land.

Between the owners of this land there were lots of famous Hungarian noble families, such as the Báthory, Bethlen or the Rákóczi.

During the 18-19C the town slowly developed. At the beginning of the 20C some industrial develops were made such as a vinegar factory and a mill were built. The new school, the general hospital, the savings bank, the telegraph office, the railway station were also built in this period, and these all show, that the civil life became more and more stronger in this town, and that its inhabitants became real citizens at this time.

After Trianon, everything had changed. Fehérgyarmat became borderland and was no longer an important center. It has lost its important connections to the east.
