You may spend some nice days in the in “the capital of hajdú people”, if you visit the spa of Hajdúböszörmény. The water contains iodide, bromide, fluoride and sodium thus it is mostly recommended for those who have rheumatism or some kind of joint problems.

The spa is situated in a large, well-kept park. Inside the complex, there are different kinds of pools, which include indoor and outdoor thermal pools, swimming pool, small pool for the children, and also an outdoor pool with water slides. If you would like to spend more days here, there is also a camp side in the park.


You might bee wondering, who are these “hajdú” people. The first part of the name of the town “Hajdú-“means some soldiers, who were before herdsman. In the 16C they organized them self into some kind of military groups. In the 17C István Bocskai availed himself of their services in the first Hungarian uprising against the Hapsburgs in 1604. After according to his promises, he gave land and noble rights to these soldiers.

But the history of this settlement started long before that time. The second pat of the name of the town “böszörmény” was before a common word, which meant “Muslim”. Until the 13C, when the Tatars invaded Hungary and this land became deserted, this settlement was the center of the Ishmaelite, who lived in Nyírség.

After, in the 14C new settlers came, and it developed quickly. Between the owners of this land one way find famous Hungarian noble families, like the Brankovics, Hunyadi or Báthori families. In the 15C it became an oppidium, which means a small town with some privileges.

After that “hajdú” people settled here, the former society of the town had changed. The inhabitants of the town didn’t has to pay any taxes, but they had some military obligations. During the 17C “hajdú” people established the “Hajdú Territory” to maintain their special rights. The capital of this territory was Hajdúböszörmény.

During the later centuries, the importance of the military obligations of hajdú people decreased. This land became more important in agriculture than in military services, and its inhabitants became simple peasants by the time.

During the communist era some extreme industrial develops were made, but with few success. The traditional agriculture was also destroyed at this time. The town recovered from this only after the 70s.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa, you should take a walk in the town, because there are some interesting things to see.

If you would like to know more about “hajdú” people, you should go to their former seat house where you cane see an interesting exhibition about their history.

You should take a walk to the old Calvinist Cemetery, where you can see some wooden grave-posts with the special boat-carving design of Hajdúböszörmény.

The oldest ruins of the town are the ruins of a former church from the 14C (Zeleméri templom). It can bee found by the borders of the town.
