If you would like to refresh your self in a spa of a high standard, the thermal spa of Hajdúszoboszló - also known as “the Mecca” of those who suffer of rheumatism - is one of the best choices in Hungary.


The history of the baths here began with the boring for hydrocarbon in this area. Although in the twenties one didn’t find hydrocarbon here, the thermal spring rush up from deep inside the soil. Soon the first simple bath was opened. After this time, the baths have developed dynamically until present day.

The healing-water of Hajdúszoboszló contains alkali-hydrogen-carbonic, fluorine, iodine bromide meta-solicic acid and meta-boracic acid. The use of the water is recommended for those who suffer of rheumatism, are after some kind of accident injury and rehabilitation, have some joint or backbone problems.


Nowadays there are three sections in the spa complex. One is the fascinating aqua park for those who enjoy the adventure-pools. The second is an indoor healing-center, with different kinds of pools and treatments. The third is the open-air pool section. Besides these, the spa complex is situated in a nice park, where you can relax in a peaceful surrounding.

If you decide to enjoy the healing water outside the spa complex, there are some hotels around the spa, with private pools inside, feed by the same springs.

Archaeologists found here finds from the time of the great migrations, so it seams like this land was already inhabited at that early time. This land was situated at the cross of important trade roads, so the Vandals, the Goths, the Gepids and the Avars all turn up here.


After the time of the conquest of Hungary, people settled down here, thus the first source which mansions the name of Szoboszló dates back to an early time, from the 11C. It was a village during the Middle Ages. When the Turks invaded Hungary, after the fall of Szolnok, this land became part of the Ottoman Empire

The first part of the name of the town “Hajdú-“ means some soldiers, who were before herdsman. In the 16C they organized them self into some kind of military groups. In the 17C István Bocskai availed himself of their services in the first Hungarian uprising against the Hapsburgs in 1604. After according to his promises, he gave land and noble rights to these soldiers.

After this time the history of the small town was almost usual. People here lived from agriculture and animal husbandry. Some changes occurred only in the 20C, when one found the thermal springs while boring for hydrocarbon in this area. After this the town became a healing resort and this determinate the life of its inhabitants until present day.

Place of interest

After refreshing you self in the healing water it is worth it to take a walk in the town, because lots of interesting sights and programs are waiting for you in Hajdúszoboszló.

Nearby the spa, you’ll see an interesting composition of bells. The 46 bells were a gift of Edit Oborzil - Tibor Jeney, an artist couple, who won world patent to the special method of making bells. The composition was made by Zoltán Rácz.

If you are interested in the remains of the former centuries, take a walk to Kálvin tér, where behind the church you’ll see some of the ruins of the old fortress. After you should visit the house known as Csanády ház, named after a great hajdú family here. It was built in Classicist style, and you can get an idea about how noble families lived here during the 17-19C.

If you are interested in Arts, don’t miss to visit the great museum of International Modern Museum, where besides of Hungarian contemporary artists’ works, you can see some works from Picasso, Le Corbusier, Renoir and Vasarely.
