You may refresh your self in a comfortable spa, if you visit Hódmez?vásárhely. The first bathing facilities were built in the 30s, but since that time the spa was rebuilt time after time according to the claims of the guests.


The water contains alkali-hydrogen-carbonic, thus it is mostly recommended for those who have some kind of motor disease.


The building complex is situated in a well-kept park. There are different kinds of thermal pools, a separated building with swimming pools, and small pools for the children. Besides bathing, different kinds of wellness and therapeutic treatments are available, like massages, sauna and solarium or under water gymnastics.

History

According to the finds that archeologists found here, this land was inhabited since the Stone Age. During the Great Migrations the Hun and Avar people inhabited this land.


In the early Middle Ages, Hódmez?vásárhely was two separated villages, “Hód” and “Vásárhely”. The first sources which mention the name of these villages date back to the 13C


During the 14-15C it developed, and became an oppidium, which means a small town with some privileges. These rights were due to the help of its owner at the time, János Hunyadi.


When the Turks invaded Hungary it became part of the Ottoman Empire, but was the land of the sultan. This meant that it was relatively protected from exploitation. Its inhabitants got rich during this period from selling grey cattle on the further markets.


Until the second half of the 20C, Hódmez?vásárhely was an agricultural settlement. After 1945 some industrial develops were made. The main sectors were machine and porcelain production.

Place of interest


After refreshing you self in the spa, you should take a walk in the town because there are some interesting sights around.


The old Calvinist church was built in the18C. Its drawered barrel vault is worth to see. There is also a synagogue in Hódmez?vásárhely, which was built in the 19C. The oldest church in town is the Csomorkányi church, from the 14C. Nowadays only some ruins remain.


If you are interested in local traditions and culture, there are some interesting exhibitions in town. János Tornyai Museum has some great displays about folk culture of this region. In Csúcsi Pottery House you may see an exhibition about potter’s craft in Hungary. There is also a museum about the textile designs of Hódmez?vásárhely and its surrounds. In the Farm Museum (Tanyamúzeum) you can see how peasants lived here in the former centuries. There is a traditional house here, with old traditional furniture


If you are interested in arts, in The Gallery of the Great Plain (Alföld Galéria) you may see the works of the artists of this land.


The surrounding land is rich in natural beauties, so it is also worth to explore. If you would like to know more about the nature of the River Tisza, you should go to see the exbibition of the Bertalan Bodnár Nature and Environmental Protection Teaching Center (Bodnár Bertalan Természet- és Környezetvédelmi Oktatóközpont).
