History

Archeologists found here some great finds from the Celts. These graves became famous all around Europe. It seems like the first Hungarian settlement was destroyed by the Tatar troops in the 13C. After, Béla IV settled Jazygian people here. The first source which mentions the name of Jászberény dates back to the 14C. In the 16C the settlement tore into two parts, because of the religious fights between the Catholics and the Calvinists. The right and the left side of the town by River Zagyva became two separated settlement.

When the Turks invaded Hungary, they built a plank-fortress, which was destroyed during the war. Just like the neighboring settlement, Négyszállás. The ruins of this village were uncovered in recent years. After Turkish times Jászberény became the property of the Teutonic Order. Jászberény became the center of their land in Jászság. When the inhabitants bought their town and the surrounding land from the Order, then came the golden age of Jászberény. During the 18-19C the railway was laid down, new buildings were built, and its inhabitants became real citizens. Although after some administrative changes in Hungary Jászberény had lost its importance as a center of a district, and some of its privileges, it is even nowadays a great town with a lively cultural life, which attracts lost of people.
