You may have a nice time in a friendly town, if you visit the spa of Karcag. The water here contains sodium-chloride, thus it is mostly recommended for those who have some kind of motor disease. In the complex which is getting more and more popular nowadays there are thermal pools and one swimming pool. Besides these there are sport grounds by the pools.


This land is rich in archeological finds. There are plenty of tumuli around the town, which you can see even nowadays. These are protected places, former graves from the copper ages.

The settlements of the early Middle Ages were destroyed by the Tatar troops in the 13C. After, Cumanian people settled here. The first source which mentioned the name of Karcag dates back to the 16C. During the 17-18C it became deserted time after time. From that time, it developed quickly. When some surrounding settlements united with Karcag, it became the center of this region. Although it was an agricultural center, more and more craftsmen settled here. Industrial develops were made in the 19C, when the railway was laid down and new mills were built.

Although the town suffered a lot during the wars of the 20C, it still is the economical and cultural center of this region.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa, you should take a walk in the town or explore its surround, because there are plenty of interesting sights around.

If you would like to see some exhibitions, there are some great museums in town. Those who are interested in folk culture should go to the István Gy?rffy Nagykun Museum, the Pottery Museum (Fazekasház) or to the Folk Museum (Tájház). All have some great displays about traditional peasant life and crafts.

You may also see an interesting exhibition in the Medical History and Pharmacy Museum. The Pharmacy Museum still has the atmosphere of a pharmacy from the 18C, so it is definitely worth to visit!

If you would like to see old industrial buildings, you should take a walk to the mill. Nowadays there is only one old mill remains from the eleven mills of the town.

If you have the time and possibility it is also worth to explore the surrounding land. You can visit the little brother of the famous “Nine-holed” Bridge on Hortobágy, known as Zádor Bridge. The tumuli around, and the landscape are magical, and rich in natural beauties.
