There is also a thermal spa in Mátraderecske. The water contains carbonic acid, calcium, magnesium and hydrogen carbonic. It is recommended for those, who have backbone problems, some kind of joint problems or are after some kind of accident injury and rehabilitation. Inside the small complex there are two thermal pools.

Archeologists found here mammoth bones. You may see these in Gyöngyös Mátra Museum.

The first source which mentioned the name of Mátraderecske dates back to the 14C. The inhabitants of this place are the Palóc people. The rural Palóc people speak an unusual Hungarian dialect, and they have some of the more colorful folk customs and costumes in Hungary.

When the Turks invaded Hungary, Mátraderecske became part of the Ottoman Empire, and was deserted until the 17C. In the 19C the first brick factory was built, which gave work for people living here and the surrounding land.

Nowadays it is a still developing small settlement with a lively cultural life, and plays an important role in tourism.

Place of interest

After refreshing your self in the spa you should take a walk in Mátraderecske. If you like to see ruins from the Middle Ages, you should take a small excursion to the so-known Kanázs castle. It was built in the 13C and was the castle of the Aba family. It became deserted during Turkish times.
